Fashion is an art form. It is an expression of ideas. It is history … told by a visual storyteller.
The Audi Star Creation finalists became storytellers of their own collection as every design that was created speaks of their aspiration, passion and dreams. The 12 young aspiring designers amused the audience and judges with their innovative and creative design as their models strutted down the runway.
Audi Star Creation is a regional fashion design competition that identifies and nurtures emerging Asian fashion design talent. It is an event of the annual Asia Fashion Exchange (AFX).
The competition is open to aspiring designers between 16 and 35 years of Asian citizens.
Eight countries represented in Audi Star Creation finals includes first time participant from Mongolia competing for a fashion face-off for the most coveted titles Audi Star Creation 2013 and Audi Young Designer Award.
This year’s finalists were challenged to design around the theme “InspirAsia” which has captivated us with an astounding original creation on the runway. Most of the collections from the finalist were strongly drawn from their cultural background, experiences from places visited and their surroundings.
I strongly believed Asian young designers are very charismatic and still very much rooted with the culture they grew up with.
Our homegrown designer, 21-year-old student from Temasek Polytechnic, Haziq Putra was the star of the competition.
He won the judges with his collection “Pursuit to Freedom” and took home both titles for Audi Star Creation and Audi Young Designer Award (AYDA).
The AYDA is given to the winner whose creation best embodies the Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression.
Haziq’s menswear collection “Pursuit of Freedom” was inspired during his visit to the Malaysian state of Kelantan whereby the design embodies the shape of its icon, Wau Bulan, a giant kite flown by its men and the ikan pari, or stingray.
A perfect combination of traditional cultures abstract with a modern twist of design in tailoring.
“The Contour” collection from Vietnam finalist, Vu Ta Linh, 26, took the second spot in Audi Star Creation.
His contouring detailed of the fabrics that depicted rice terraces of Sapa in northern Vietnam was innovative and artistic.
I applaud such designers who are able to translate one’s culture across into his/her design and even doing it fashionably.
The third spot winner, 24-year-old Sun Yi Jin of China hopes to revive some of the costumes and handcrafting techniques of the country’s 56 ethnic minorities, many of which have been lost over time.
The simplicity of her collection “Return” stands out as she created her own fabric using both traditional crafting skills and technology.
What stood out most this year was the strong focus on fabric manipulation, said Douglas Benjamin, Chief Operation Officer of F J Benjamin and Co-Creative Director of RAOUL.
The three winners each walkaway with $10,000 cash prize, a one year internship with leading fashion retailer F J Benjamin and the chance to launch their maiden capsule collection at next year Audi Star Creation.
We salute all finalists of Audi Star Creation 2013. You have successfully brought your culture across borders with fashion.
