The Day I Met a Ghost

I had my first ghostly encounter when I was around 6.

It was just like any other night. I remember at that time my parents, sister & I slept in the same room. The position that I took on the bed, the first thing I saw when I awoke…. Those memories seemed so fresh.

That street light shined in through the window near the ceiling…. It was one particular night that I woke up to the same sight, and a light-hearted melody. My half asleep mind got confused for a few moments. Where did that melody come from? I liked how it sounded. I sat up on bed, trying to figure out the source of the music at such an ungodly hour.

Something at the corner of my eye caught my attention. On my left is a small sofa stool where Dad always dumped his pair of jeans on. And there….. is a little, glowy green figure dancing with Dad’s jeans.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes to make sure I wasn’t seeing wrong.

There he (I think it’s a he?) is, just the size of a gingerbread man, happily dancing to the melody. He was so green, I couldn’t see any features at all. To confirm what I saw, I woke my younger sister up (she was 4 at the time). She sat up groggily telling me that she dreamt of zombies (haha), so I told her “I show you real one” pointing to little green gingerbread man. She opened her eyes so big that I didn’t think she had been sleeping at all. Instead of being afraid, we were actually quite excited because he looked kinda cute.

I took my bolster wanting to poke him to see if he is really real, or rather, if my bolster will pass through him like all the ghosts on TV did. But I think there was still a small level of uncertainty in me that restricted that action – in case of infuriating the little green gingerbread man. I woke my Mom up to get her to look. She didn’t even turn towards the direction I was pointing at and just keep mumbling “No lah, there’s nothing. Go to sleep.”

We sat up through the remaining of the night. When dawn breaks and the first ray of light broke into the room, we watched as little green gingerbread man leaped into the back of the wardrobe, calling party’s over.

The sister and I looked at each other in awe, assuring ourselves that what we had just seen was real. No doubt, we kept repeating what we saw over the next few weeks to the parents, who eventually felt that we may be telling the truth. Dad got the fengshui master to see the room and we heard from Mom that the fengshui master said that there is a spirit living in the room with us. They changed the arrangement of the wardrobe.

We never see little green gingerbread man ever again.
