The way one perceives beauty depends on your culture, the part of the world you live in, and the era you are in. For example, whilst the Korean look is considered beautiful in recent years, the straight Korean eyebrow does not suit everybody and not everyone considers the v-shape face beautiful.
In the Middle Ages, a woman’s forehead is considered the sexiest part of the face. To accentuate this further, women would remove their eyelashes and eyebrows. In the 1600s, a stout and voluptuous woman was once thought to be very sexy and feminine.
The perception of beauty around the world evolves alongside culture, technology advancements as well as trends. In our pursuit of beauty, safety shouldn’t just be part of your consideration criteria — it should be your priority.

When white lead and vinegar was used in the 18th century to even out the skin tone and remove pigmentation, they brought grave danger with deadly consequences to the users. This fascination of being fair skin persisted for decades till the early 1900s. Some women went to great, not to mention dangerous, lengths and applied arsenic to their skin. It was cheap and readily available at that time, but it also comprises toxic chemicals such as sulphur and metals that could cause cancer and skin poisoning.
It is now 2016, and applying arsenic is neither a sane nor legal way of whitening our skin. Advancements in technology have given us a slew of clinically-proven, safe yet effective medical aesthetics treatments that are approved by authorities to choose from. Women are no longer going through a beauty makeover for others like how it was, for instance, during the Meiji era. Married Japanese women had to dye their teeth black to symbolise their submission to their spouse. The only time our teeth is darkened in this modern day and age, is only after a plate of squid ink pasta.
