Cushion compacts made their way into the beauty scene with a bang and they are now an essential item in our makeup pouch. I myself jumped onto the bandwagon too, not just because I'm a trend follower, but because of how easy it is to use cushion compacts, and how beautiful their dewy finish is on our skin.

However, at the back of my mind, I do have a nagging concern: Is the cushion compact the perfect breeding ground for bacteria?
The answer is definitely a yes. We dip the cushion puff back and forth onto the cushion compact and our skin, and when we leave the sponge inside the cushion compact after use, it will never be fully dry. Furthermore, when we are out for the day, we open up the cushion compact to do our touch ups in between, with all the grime and dirt on our face. Yucks, no?

Most cushion compact brands have stepped forward to reassure customers that their products have been through rigorous testings and they are absolutely safe to use. Brands like Amorepacific even details its product-testing procedures on their website so that their customers can have a peace of mind.
However, even with the safest products, it is still our own responsibility to keep our products hygienic. Just like how you can buy a packet of fresh milk, but if you forget to put it in the fridge and leave it on the kitchen top for the whole day in our 35 degrees Singapore weather, it is going to go bad the next day.

I'm not ready to give up my cushion compacts because I really love them and they are one of the greatest beauty inventions that speaks great skin and convenience! So here are some tips to keep your cushion compact clean and hygienic, and not be the cause of breakouts on your skin.
1. Change your cushion compact every 6 months
In fact, if you are using it everyday, it wouldn't last you more than 2-3 months. It is advisable to change a cushion compact at least every 6 months just to make sure that you keep your product fresh and clean.
2. Wash your cushion puff regularly
Just like how we advise you to wash your normal brushes and sponge regularly, do the same for your cushion puffs and dry them thoroughly. Get makeup brushes and sponge cleaners to disinfect and get rid of bacteria. Alternatively, warm water and soap will do fine too.

3. Buy a few more cushion puff for replacement
While regular washing helps, you can change your cushion puff to keep it in tip top condition. Not only will your application be smoother and flawless without the wear and tear from the old puffs, it is definitely more hygienic.

4. Keep your cushion compact in a cool, dry place
This sounds like a statement you will find on the back of some food packaging but a warm and moist place is the best breeding ground for bateria!
5. Close your cushion compact tightly
Do not leave your cushion compact lying around, and worst still, without closing it properly. Germs and bacteria will enter the compact and then it is best that you say goodbye to it and buy a new one.
