Learn to Cook Some Simple Korean Food Yourself!

The Korean wave infiltrated every nook and cranny of the world. Besides all the catchy tunes of Kpop bands and heart wrenching K-dramas, the world is getting obsessed with the kimchi world of Korean Food. Korean restaurants rose in popularity these years and mushroomed all over our little island.

Easy Bulgogi (Korean BBQ Beef)

Ingredients
1/4 yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 green onions, chopped, dark green parts separated from white and light green parts
1/3 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon Korean red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 1/2 pounds beef sirloin steak, cut very thin using kitchen shears
1 teaspoon honey, or to taste

Step 1: Combine yellow onion, white and light green parts of green onions, soy sauce, sugar, sesame seeds, garlic, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, ginger, and black pepper in a bowl until marinade is well mixed. Add steak slices to marinade; cover and refrigerate, 1 hour to 1 day.

Step 2: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, cook and stir steak and marinade together in the hot skillet, adding honey to caramelize the steak, until steak is cooked through, about 5 minutes. Garnish bulgogi with green parts of green onions.

Korean Spicy Chicken and Potato (Tak Toritang)

Ingredients

2 1/2 pounds chicken drumettes
2 large potatoes, cut into large chunks
2 carrots, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 large onion, cut into 8 pieces
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons white sugar

3 tablespoons gochujang (Korean hot pepper paste)

Step 1: In a large pot over medium heat, mix the chicken, potatoes, carrots, onion, sugar, and garlic. Pour in water and soy sauce, and stir in sugar and hot pepper paste.

Step 2: Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer 45 minutes, until chicken juices run clear, vegetables are tender, and liquid has thickened. Serve with hot cooked rice.

Chap Chee Noodles

Ingredients
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 green onions, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sesame seeds
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/3 pound beef top sirloin, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots
1/2 cup sliced bamboo shoots, drained
1/4 pound napa cabbage, sliced
2 cups chopped fresh spinach 

3 ounces cellophane noodles, soaked in warm water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Step 1: In a large bowl, combine 1 tablespoon soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, garlic, sesame seeds, 1 teaspoon sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Stir in sliced beef, and marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Heat wok or large skillet over medium-high heat, then drizzle with oil. Cook beef until evenly brown. Stir in carrots, bamboo shoots, napa cabbage, and spinach. Add cellophane noodles, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Reduce heat to medium, and cook until heated through.
