Having beautifully manicured nails definitely makes us happier, and gives us strength to fight the day (yes guys, they do). However, all the nail art we pile onto our nails all the time, and the many tasks we have to complete with our hands throughout the day can make our nails dry and brittle.

If you are like me, facing dry, peeling and damaged nails, making it impossible to paint on any of my favourite nail colours, it is time to take action and give our nails all the TLC that is needed. With a little effort, you can definitely get your nail health in check and look forward to having healthier and better-looking nails.

There are many reasons as to why our nails are dry and damaged, and here are some of the top contenders, and the various ways we can save our dry and damaged nails.

1. Not taking supplements

One of the main reasons for weak nails is iron deficiency. Iron helps to form haemoglobin which brings the oxygen-rich red blood cells to our nails for healthy growth.  If your body is lacking in biotin, a form of Vitamin B complex that is responsible for strengthening and thickening nails, it may result is dry and brittle nails too.

Solution: Do take more iron-rich and biotin-rich food like liver, cooked eggs, whole grains and avocado. If not, you can always consider getting some health supplements from your nearby pharmacy.

2. Overusing your nails

We type away excessively, use our nails to open can drinks and pry open boxes. These will stress our nails and result in breaking and chipping.

Solution: Try to use your finger pads instead, or grab any object like a pen or pencil to help you with it.

3. Not wearing gloves for chores

We can't escape our daily chores but we can definitely protect our nails from the harsh detergents and cleansers. The chemicals can be harmful to both our nails and skin and damage them in the process.

Solution: When you are doing your dishes or going about your daily house cleaning, put on a pair of gloves to prevent both your hands and nails from drying out. Limit exposure to all the harsh chemicals, and always remember to moisturize your hands after that.

4. Leaving on nail polish for too long

Leaving on nail polish for weeks can sap moisture from your nails, leaving them brittle and weak.

Solution: It is recommended that we remove our nail polish once it starts to chip, and let our nails rest for a few days before putting on a fresh new coat again.

5. Not applying a base coat

You may think that it is ok to skip applying a base coat when you DIY your manicures. Skipping the base coat may result in stained nails, causing your nails looking yellowish and dirty. Without the base coat as a protective barrier, your nail polish may dry out your nails and cause them to be brittle and damaged.  And to add on to its benefits, many base coats are packed with ingredients to give extra care to your nails nowadays.

Solution: Never skip your base coat. Opt for a one that can give you multiple nail care benefits like Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 . It helps to strengthen and protect our nails, and at the same time, acts as both a base coat and top coat. Talk about cost savings!

6. Addicted to gel polishes

They are beautiful and long lasting but the removal process can be pretty harsh on our nails. All the nail filing and soaking of your nails in acetone nail polish remover thins out and dry your nails, resulting in peeling and breakage.

Solution: It is better to alternate between gel polish and the traditional nail polish, or take a break to let your nails have a breather in between your gel manicures. Alternatively, opt for Sally Hansen Miracle Gel instead of heading to the salon for your traditional gel sessions. Its removal is hassle-free and you can get the volume and shine of gel nails without the need for UV light curing or to go through the harsh removal process.

7. Not applying hand or nail creams

We apply so many expensive serums and creams on our face, but we do we always neglect our nails? Not reapplying hand lotions throughout the day can dry out your hands and nails and cause your nails to become dry and brittle.

Solution: Use a good nail care product like Sally Hansen Moisture Rehab™ to put the hydration back into your nails. Good news for those who always have got nail polish on: Sally Hansen Moisture Rehab™ can be applied even over dried manicure, therefore, you do not need to remove your pretty nail polishes and bare your nails to give them the pampering they deserve!
