So you urgently need a dress for an event and your best friend has stepped in to your rescue by offering you free reign over her wardrobe collection. Considering the both of you are of the same height and weight, you figured there won’t be any issues with the fit. You pick out a dress that you remembered looked good on her, confidently assured that you’ll look stunning in it too.

But the smile on your face soon makes way for a frown, seemingly disturbing even. For some reason, the dress doesn’t seem to take kindly to you, leaving you a little quizzed. Then you notice bulges on your body that seem to be accentuated by the dress and you sink deeper into a dejected feeling but all the while still remaining perplexed.

The anecdote above is no fiction.

In fact, there are many women who have experienced situations as such which leave them a little perturbed. So how can two people who seemingly are of the same height and weight fit differently in the same dress?

Here's the low down.

Most people assume that weight loss is fat loss; which is one of mankind’s biggest conceptions. For example, although the “eat less, exercise more” lifestyle (which we have been taught to believe and practice) can make us lose weight but it does not necessarily mean we lose fat in the process.

An adverse effect of this lifestyle can actually lead to the much scoffed and ridiculed, “yoyo” diet, even. Weight loss, true to its name, is the lowering of your body weight i.e. the total weight of your bones, muscles, organs and so forth.

Fat loss on the other hand is focused on lowering the amount of fat a person’s body carries.

So in a nutshell, 2 people of the same weight will usually have different body fat content and body shape. For that very reason, the same dress does not necessarily fit one as it does the other.

Before we dismiss that all body fats are bad, it’s important to know that they can be divided into basically 2 types - essential fat and storage fat.

Essential fat, as its name implies, is necessary for normal and healthy functioning. The fats are stored in small amounts in the bone marrow, organs, central nervous system and muscles. Women have a higher percentage of essential fat than men, taking into consideration of fat found around the breasts, pelvis, hips and thighs. For women, these essential fats are believed to be critical for normal reproductive function.

Storage fat, on the other hand, is fat accumulated beneath the skin and certain specific areas in the body, including the muscles. Storage fat is also the deep fat that protects the internal organs from injuries. Do you know that women and men are reported to have equal amount of storage fat?

Though it’s advisable to have a certain amount of storage fat due to its protective functions, most of it, however, are of little significance or expendable. It is this type of fat that a person needs to lose when they lose weight.

Because the weighing scales are just numbers

Diet and exercise in general can do wonders to the physical appearance and confidence of a person but what’s more important is to practice a proper diet and exercise routines to not only lose weight but fats as well.

These days, the innovation in modern technology has made it possible for women and man alike to lose fat via medical procedures but bear in mind that some may be risky (despite success claims) so it’s always best to consult your physician on the best method suited for your body.

It’s a natural yearn especially for women, to want to look good.

After all, compliments in regards that a woman gets can boost her confidence and overall well-being as well. The science of weight loss and body fat loss is something that need to be understood. Though on the surface, it can be a little daunting and even discouraging to know that while you’ve been losing weight it does not necessarily translate to fat loss, nonetheless a woman should strive to have a better understanding of the subject.

When she knows her body, she knows herself which will set her on the right path to being a better person both in mind and body. So seek help from a qualified doctor and never shy to ask questions as it can only benefit oneself.
