No matter how we give that little bulge endearing terms like "spare tyres" or "love handles", a belly is a belly. Beer belly is a condition that plagues many men and because of the alliterative term that is often used, we tend to think that drinking beer is the cause of having a bulging tummy.

Does drinking beer really result in the infamous beer belly? According to Dr. Terence Tan from Halley Medical Aesthetics, there is no evidence that drinking beer leads to increased visceral fat, which is the fat that accumulates within the tummy, surrounding our internal organs, under the abdominal muscle. It is not the beer, but the calories that come along with it. In fact, if your calorie-intake exceeds those that you need, weight gain is unavoidable.
“There is no evidence that drinking beer leads to increased visceral fat within the tummy,” adds Dr. Tan. “The proportion of visceral fat is mainly genetic in nature. Weight loss is probably the best way to combat visceral fat.” Dr. Tan also mentioned that the proportion of visceral fat is mainly genetic in nature. This is the exact reason why those who can eat mountains of food a day and yet still stay slim, but those who eat healthily put on weight with just one slice of cake. Your genetics also decide where your fats are deposited in the body. For those of you who are more prone to having them deposited where the belly sits, your beer belly will definitely be more pronounced.

On top of genetics being the main culprit, gender also plays a big part in the equation too. Take a quick look around and you would realize that majority of those who are plagued by the classic beer belly look are men. Women, on the other hand, tend to have their fats deposited over their thighs and butts.
