“You’ve changed. You’re no longer the person I used to know,” said someone, who used to be one of my best friends in the past.
At that point, when she used to be the centre of my life, I felt my world came crashing on me. It felt as though I’ve lost the person who meant so much to me back then. Even though they still mean something to me, I knew that things cannot go back the way they are, and they all happen for a reason. I was changing into who I was cut out to be, and that can never be changed.
With circumstances like that, it feels as though you are not allowed to change, for fear what others might react or think of us. However, change is an everyday thing. Try as you may, you can’t control change. You change because circumstances change, and you cannot control the circumstances around you. Be it encountering a heartbreak, a career advancement, surviving tragedies or even going through your day-to-day lives, to stay the same amidst them all is quite an impossible feat. It would be really upsetting if you were to stay the same through ups and downs – how are you then living life to the fullest?
The ever famous quote “The only thing that is constant is change” reminds us that we can’t control what changes around us. The only reason why we fear change is because we are too comfortable with status quo, and we never want to be shifted out of that zone. However, there is no need to be afraid of change because often than not, change can lead us to something even more beautiful and worthwhile. You may not see it know, but God has a plan for all of us. We were made to do great things and only change will allow us to be transformed into someone worthy of great things.
It might be tough to adapt to changes, but from my past experiences, I’ve learnt that no matter how much you don’t want things to change, they will if they have to. And through changes in your surroundings, you will be pushed to make changes to your attitude and your outlook, all just to adapt to new beginnings. As a result, this change in you might not be welcomed by people around you, but it is inevitable for you to grow and transform into someone who can achieve greater things. Remember, only true friends will stay by your side and learn to adapt to your change. People change, and they come and go too. You just need to wait for the right people who will stick with you through thick and thin.
Every day when I look at myself in the mirror, I tell myself one thing, “You are changing yourself to be better than you are yesterday, and that’s all that matters.”
