New Zealand photographer Henry Hargreaves, known for his recreations of the last meals of death row inmates and photographs of burning food, has collaborated with artist Caitlin Levin on another food-themed project called ‘Food Maps’ that visualizes the maps of countries and continents around the world using their iconic foods.
The United States is represented by a collage of corn and wheat, and different types of noodles band together to form China. India is created from a rich tapestry of spices while citrus fruits make up a colorful mosaic of South America.
Inspiration for the project stemmed from the duo’s love of travel and the maps were created with real food and painstakingly put together by hand. The resulting images are a fascinating look at the distinct cultures of each country and continent through the lens of food, which “show how food has traveled the globe – transforming and becoming a part of the cultural identity of the place.”
