The Art of Injecting Dermal Fillers

Many of us know the difference between the various types of injectable dermal fillers available in the market. But how many of us ask how a procedure, say a nose filler, is done?

Very often, we leave it up to the experienced hands of our medical aesthetic doctor. But do you know that doctors too have different ways of doing dermal fillers?

Some doctors inject a few individual drops of filler on the nose bridge, which they will then smoothen out by massage later. This is a tried and tested method but doctors must exercise care to ensure that the filler is evenly distributed.

Minimal pain, no bruises

Other doctors prefer another method, which distributes the dermal filler more evenly. “What we do is to insert and slide a micro-cannula under the patient's skin so that the filler can be applied evenly with practically no pain or bruising,” says Dr. Terence Tan, Director, Halley Medical Aesthetics.

With this method, the doctor inserts the micro-cannula only once to the treatment area compared to multiple injections required in the first method.

In the case of a nose filler, for instance, Dr. Tan will insert the micro-cannula at the tip of the nose rather than inject the patient a few times with a needle along the nose bridge. Furthermore, the micro-cannula is blunt and slides under the skin easily with minimal pain. This pushes our blood vessels aside whereas the method of multiple injections cuts through the blood vessels.

That is why not only is this method of using micro-cannula less painful, it also results in less bleeding. “We get a better result with this method as it distributes the filler more evenly,” says Dr. Tan.
