News website PolicyMic started the ‘#YesAllWomen’ movement to show solidarity and support for women, and to act as a platform for them to share stories and combat sexism.
The project was in response to the tragic mass shooting last month in Isla Vista, California, which was carried out by 22-year-old Elliot Rodger.
Rodger had voiced, amongst other things, hatred against women, and followed up his ‘My Twisted World’ manifesto by going on a killing spree which left seven people dead, including himself.
The ‘YesAllWomen’ rallying cry reached over one million tweets, and has spawned a second movement called ‘#AllMenCan’.
Photographs tagged with the hashtag show the faces of men who are strongly opposed to the misogynistic and entitled attitudes shared by advocates of Rodger.
Some of the messages they carry include “#AllMenCan treat women as equals” and “Men are never entitled to women’s bodies”.
