The usual images appear on the evening news: morbidly obese people munching junk food; blind-drunk teenagers falling out of pubs; another celebrity signed up by a diet company, only to end up fatter than ever…
But what’s this? Behind a kitchen counter is a shiny haired, clear-skinned vision of health, milkmaid-pretty in a yellow shift dress.
She does a little dance as she shakes up a macadamia and cider-vinegar dressing for a superfood salad, then whizzes together a pesto sauce for raw zucchini pasta, perfect for the gluten intolerant.
“There’s no such thing as junk food!” declares nutritionist Lola Berry. “There’s junk and there’s real food. So eat real food.”
Berry (whose real name is Lauren Smith) is 28. Eight years ago, she was partying five nights a week and consuming vast quantities of lamingtons.
Today she is the passionate “Steve Irwin of nutrition”, extolling the benefits of goji berries, chia seeds, quinoa and, of course, green smoothies.
You know she’s made it because she has a manager.
