Now & Then: Singapore Airline's Stewardess' Make-up

Apart from the slim silhouette shaped by the hour-glass figure and the neat high hair bun which spring to mind whenever we first speak of Singapore Air-stewardess, their loud heavy and thick makeup also come into play.

Back then, layers and layers of thick foundation, bold electric blue eyeshadow coupled with red hot lips were the ‘SIA Makeup standard’ and the norm. Such loud colours are dangerous to use and mix with because with the missing set of makeup skills required, one can look like a drag queen instead.

It was thought that such colours were too loud and strong to present the sweet dainty look that every Singaporean girl should don and now, SQ girls are taught to tweak their makeup colours and skills that are more subtler than before.

New application guidelines and blending techniques also aim to make their faces look softer and more natural.

According to industry sources, the cabin crew now have a wider variety of shades to choose from. "For instance, the blue kebaya-clad In-flight Stewardesses - the lowest-ranked female attendant - who are assigned to wear blue eyeshadow, can now choose from a colour palette of greyish-blue to midnight blue to create a toned down look."

Apart from that, other beauty facial features also had the opportunity to create a softer sweeter look. Now, false eyelashes will now be allowed, if they are not more than 1cm in length and if they do not look too dramatic. Previously, only those who had received prior approval from their grooming instructors were allowed to wear fake lashes.

Eyeliner must also be kept simple; in other words, dramatic wing-tipped strokes are not allowed.

And while bright, cherry red lips are still favoured, the attendants can now choose from a palette of lip colours ranging from reddish-pink to plum which may also suit many girls’ preference over bright red lips.

As with many who prefer the current flexibility in makeup colours, I am of the same opinion as well, as representing Singapore is an extremely important iconic image and it should not even go anywhere near the ‘drag queen’ image.

That aside, safety always precedes anything else and is the utmost importance. With the recent unfortunate news regarding our neighbour country, Malaysia’s Airlines, we at Myfatpocket prays hard that Singapore Airlines will fly safe and Singapore to receive the ‘World’s Best Airport’ despite our geographical size.
