If you’ve ever wondered what girls talk about during their heart-to-heart/catch up sessions, one common topic would be that of RELATIONSHIPS! Girls talk and news spread fast about which guy makes a good date, which guy to stay clear from and what to look for in a man! For the less informed, fret not because this post will shed some light on what Singaporean girls generally look for in a man!

1. Decisive

In all things, do not be fickle. If you ask a girl out on a date, have some places and free dates in mind. This shows that you spared enough thought. Once the date, time and place are settled, keep to your appointment and don’t make last minute changes. If you said you would do something, do it. Most girls like to feel a sense of certainty and security when they are out with their other half.

2. Punctual

In Singapore where efficiency and productivity are prized, it isn’t a surprise that Singaporean girls especially hate waiting for no valid reason, repeatedly. If you value her time and appreciate having time set-aside for you, you best show that you cherish it.

3. Carries tissue paper around

This may sound strange… but given our weather, humidity and all the good food/snacks, having a tissue paper is definitely a plus. Being able to wipe away perspiration or blow your nose freely will definitely guarantee one’s comfort. Girls remember when their small needs are met.

4. Smells good

This brings us back to Singapore’s humidity again. Perspiring is normal but it isn’t a good reason to smell bad! While guys are visual creatures, girls are way more sensitive when it comes to smell!

5. Pays for the first date

Yes we understand that we shouldn’t expect guys to pay for everything, all the time. But first dates matter, more to some than others. We don’t need some fancy dinner so keep it simple and keep it within your budget.

6. Respects his family

Singaporeans are mainly Asians with Asian perspectives on certain things, such as filial piety and love for the family. Even if our guy feels that he has been misunderstood or if his family irritates him, there is no need to retaliate and become the aggressor. If you can’t keep your cool and love your family through thick and thin, we’ll have doubts handing our hearts over to you.

7. Texts properly

Do not use short form or terms like “hahas”, “okie” or “kays”. Guys who use short form appear sloppy and we have a hard time deciphering what you’re saying. AND don’t use this “ :/ “ if we’re having a serious conversation and if you’re apologizing. It doesn’t seem sincere and we just don’t like it. Sorry :/

8. Wears a watch

Girls like it when guys wear watches. Superficial as it may seem, it suggests punctuality, discipline and good taste.

9. Wears shoes

Plenty of Singaporean guys look fine….until we look down and see slippers/sandals poking out. Yes, we understand that it is convenient and that Singapore is warm. But it looks sloppy, spoils your look, and looks completely out of place in most places. We want to be a well dressed, or at the very least, a decently dressed couple.

10. Plans little random surprises

This may appear as a sweeping statement to some, but Singaporean guys don’t seem to fare well in the romance department. They just don’t bring in the spark and the excitement! Hide flowers in the car boot, turn up with ice cream for her and her family, hang a cute keychain on her bag when she isn’t looking, surprise her with tickets to her favourite musical! Just ensure that you’re 85% sure that she would enjoy the surprise!

11. Honesty

Honesty is the best policy and being willing and able to communicate is paramount. Even if it is something that seems minute to you, if it bothers you and will likely to keep bothering you, talk about it. Be honest with how you feel, even if it means telling the girl that you don’t feel anything anymore. Be a good, trustworthy guy.

That’s it! At the end of the day, be someone you’re proud of. All the best!
