After investing so much money into that beautiful leather bag, we really want it to stay in shape and last forever. However, you are going to be so wrong if you think you can just leave them in the cupboard and expect them to stay the beautiful piece they were. Singapore’s hot and humid weather does little for our bags, and our investment pieces require a little more attention to stay in their tip top condition.
Gemma Gil, Founder and Managing Director of ColorWash, shared some tips on luxury bag care with us at the ColorWash’s ‘Rainproof for Year-end’ event. It was an insightful session and we are definitely going to share these tips with you!
Tips for Luxury Bag Care:
1. If you accidentally spill food and drinks on your bag, use ColorWash’s Soft Cleaner Wipes to wipe down your bag and that should suffice. The wipes are water-based and delicate unlike sanitizing baby wipes that may contain alcohol and oil contents. However, if the stain remains even after wiping, do not attempt to remove the stains with home soap or cleaners or you risk having irreversible damage to your bag. 2. If water spillage occurs, or if you get caught in a downpour, you should dry your leather bag with a hair dryer that is held at a distance and set to a cool temperature. High heat at close distance damages the leather bag. You can also stuff newspaper inside your bag to absorb moisture as they are good moisture absorbers.
3. Stuffing newspaper inside your bag can maintain the shape of the bag. However, do wrap the newspaper with a layer of tracing paper first, as ink stains might transfer onto your bag.
4. Do not store your bags directly next to each other. Always leave a little space in between them. Many bags are coated with enamel and wax and they may melt and stick to other surfaces when exposed to heat over a period of time. Remember how hot and humid Singapore weather is!
5. Condition your bag. Buy a good leather conditioner from the market to do that. In fact, many big brands carry their own range of bag conditioners for you to take care of your bags. Otherwise, you can opt to bring your bag down to ColorWash for them to moisturise your bag. Moisturizing helps to maintain and soften leather products to prevent drying and cracking.
