How did the fat freezing idea come about?
Who would’ve thought that popsicles could pave the way to a new fat-elimination technology? But apparently that’s what happened. A study in 1970 showed that children who consumed a lot of popsicles ended up with cheek dimples and the condition was called “Popsicle Panniculitis”. A decade later, a study on the effects of cold during the winter months that led to thigh fat reduction for horse riders was published. It was called the “Equestrian Cold Panniculitis”.
Dr. Manstein and Dr. R Rox Anderson, both Harvard Medical School doctors, began investigating the effects of cold temperature in the elimination of fat cells. They discovered that fat cells were more sensitive to cold and from that discovery and many tests later, they were able to define the exact temperature at which it is most effective.
Suffice to say, the rest was history and cryolipolysis was born.
What is cryolipolysis actually?
Cryolipolysis is a combination of two words—cryogenic, meaning “frost” and lipolysis which means “to dissolving fat cells by non-surgical means”. Cryolipolysis is used to remove certain areas of body fat that are just under the skin to contour a person.
Freezing your fat at any inch of the body
Ever since the company, Zeltiq, had its CoolSculpting system approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010, the procedure became so hot that they expanded the areas of coverage by creating suitable applicators—from small and large applicator to surface applicator—to suit each part of your body.
