As we stand in celebration for our nation 48th year of Independence, let us also pay tribute to the flower that represents the people of Singapore. An orchid hybrid none other than Vanda Miss Joaquim. It was chosen particularly for its vibrant colours, hardiness and resilience - qualities that reflects the Singapore spirit.
Miss Singapore Rachel Kum will be wearing a dark pink silk-satin and chiffon gown which has a giant Vanda Miss Joaquim, attached to the back at the Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas this month.
Since ancient times the orchid has been a source of fasciation and inspiration – not just for artists, writers, historians and others drawn to their mysterious unparalleled variety. Unlike other flowers that have served humanity in many useful ways, the orchid seems to be a flower whose reputation lies entirely in its symbolism. Rare and pure in colour, it has simply represented perfection for hundred of years.
The orchid has been a symbol of beauty and luxury because it has always been rare and expensive. The gift of an orchid was considered the most special floral gift, and was the most impressive bouquet at the weddings of the social, political and economics elites.
Today, the price of an orchid may be within reach of most people, but it still carries its rare and exotic mystique. And what’s rare and delicate is also considered beautiful. Whatever the colour of the orchid, its purity conveys messages of love, beauty, wisdom and thoughtfulness.
Nevertheless orchid of any kind is a natural eye-catcher and it’s a fact that many famous names in the fashion and culture industries are gaining inspiration from this magnificent plant.
Singapore will never forget the historical moment when The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited our island last year for their “Far East Diamond Jubilee” tour. Kate Middleton never fails to dress to the occasion. And much to our delight Kate wore a pale pink kimono-inspired dress by Jenny Packham featured sweet hand-painted orchids along the bodice and skirt to attend an orchid naming ceremony after them and the late Princess Diana.
The Duchess also wore an orchid inspired purple floral dress by a Singapore-born designer Prabal Gurung paying homage to Singapore as a host to attend State Dinner at The Istana thereafter.
So ladies let’s get creative this National Day beside wearing the usual red and white attire, why not get inspired by orchids with some of these fun ideas from head-to-toe and even smelling like a seductive orchid!
Happy Birthday Singapore and wishing you continue to bloom ever flourishly and astound the world over!
An Orchid by Any Other Name is Still as Sweet
We are all flowers in the garden world.
Some of us are daisies dainty and bright.
Some of us are poppies with sweet contagious laughter.
If there was a flower for you,
You be a wild orchid.
So full of life, colours alive,
Sprinkled with scarlet and purple,
Explosions of colours racing through your petals.
