Dr. Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aesthetics says a face sans make-up and brimming with confidence tells tons about the person’s inner beauty. He challenges us to let our natural skin shine, and here’s how you can do it.

Celebrities make headlines when they go bare faced on social media or at high profile events. They don’t seem to have any problems revealing their blemishes. But do YOU dare go bare face in public?

This is such a difficult topic to face. No so much because good skin is difficult to achieve but because it is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. Just as men have their own comfort blankets, women often find comfort in their make-up. So how can one be comfortable going out without our comfort blanket? Here’s how, and let us count the ways.

Keep your skin hydrated and healthy

  1. Keep out of the sun and wear lots of sunblock.
  2. Apply lots of moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.
  3. Prevent sagginess from collagen breakdown by taking and applying lots of antioxidants like vitamin C.
  4. Have a healthy diet with lots of protein and essential nutrients, but avoid overeating by choosing low-calorie foods.

Improve skin texture

I know what most of you are thinking by now. I do all of the above and so what? When am I going to see the results from these conservative measures? It takes too long. So those looking for faster results would look to lasers for skin rejuvenation.

The first thing we should be looking at is to improve skin texture. To achieve this, the quickest method would be through resurfacing lasers. And perhaps the most common form of laser resurfacing is by fractional CO2 lasers. These lasers remove the superficial to middle layers of the skin in tiny dots all over the face to promote new skin growth, stimulate collagen, and even help remove superficial pigmentation as well. It is kind of an all rounder, just like a triathlete.

If it is so good, why is it not more popular than it is? Well, that is because following that treatment there would be many tiny dark dots appearing on the skin. These would generally peel after five to seven days. Those looking to reduce the downtime can consider Fraxel.

Commonly confused with CO2 lasers, Fraxel is different in that it is non-ablative. This means only the deeper layers of the skin is replaced while the top-most skin is retained to reduce the downtime. The remaining skin is naturally replaced much later. There is only redness for about three days, so most people can do the treatment on Friday and go back to work on Monday.

Reduce pigmentation

There are quite a few methods to reduce pigmentation out there. Light and laser devices generally work the fastest with little downtime. Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers and intense pulsed lights (IPLs) are still the most common proven treatment methods to address pigmentation.

Tighten skin

Nothing gives a woman more confidence that firm, wrinkle-free skin. Skin loosens due to loss of collagen from aging and sun exposure. Mature women also lose facial bone volume leading to loss of support.

Non-invasive methods of skin tightening like Ultherapy and minimally invasive methods like threadlifts are very popular now. Fillers are also very important to fill lines and wrinkles formed due to lost of volume. Skin tightening to tighten from the outside followed by modest filler treatment to increase volume and tighten from the inside leads to a natural result.

It’s mental!

Lastly, while make-up is important, let’s not be too hung up about make-up all the time. Despite imperfections, a bare face brimming with confidence tells tons about the person’s inner beauty and that cannot be achieved by any aesthetic treatment.

Cheers to going BARE FACED!
