We Need Bacteria for Good Health. Really?

We think of the word bacteria and we go yucks! But are all bacteria bad?

Credit: Wise Geek Health

Bacteria get a lot of bad press because they can cause diseases and illnesses. But then you are going to be so wrong if you think that all bacteria are bad. Some bacteria are good for us and in fact, our bodies do need them to function properly.

Good bacteria

Credit: Huffington Post

Good bacteria in our body help to destroy the bad bacteria, digest our food, and even manage our calories.  However, they can get upset by medications or a poor diet and when that happens, bad bacteria will take over and that is when we start to fall sick.  Because it is almost impossible to get rid of all the bad bacteria in us, it is important keep the level of good and bad bacteria in their delicate balance to stay healthy.

The good guys: Probiotics and Prebiotics

Reference: Probiotic Digest

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that can help to combat bacteria imbalance in our body, especially in our digestive system, and they help to keep our gut healthy.

However, probiotics are known to be fragile and they can be easily destroyed by heat and stomach acid. That’s where prebiotics come in. Prebiotics is a plant fibre that nourishes probiotics, helping probiotics to grow and thereby promoting the growth of good bacteria in our gut.

In simpler words, we need both prebiotics and probiotics for our body to function optimally.

VITAGEN LESS SUGAR

Every bottle of VITAGEN LESS SUGAR has billions of live probiotic cultures that can withstand our gastric juice and bile to reach our intestines to fight harmful bacteria. In addition to that, Each bottle of VITAGEN LESS SUGAR has 7.5g of prebiotic fibre and makes up almost 28% of the recommended daily dietary fibre intake.

My Wardrobe Is Exploding!!!

And to help me with that, I need to take part in flea markets to sell them away! Sometimes I donate the clothes away so that it will not be a waste but….. most of my clothes are super new and expensive!! :(

Whenever friends come over for a gathering or dinner, they will tell me how messy my room is because clothes are EVERYWHERE!!!

I saw the Guardian of Clothes when I received an email from a flea organizer! Hahaha. This is not just any flea. I received a lot of emails from flea markets asking me to take part but then…. The one I took part in recently don’t even require me to be there to sell my clothes!! All I have to do is to drop bags and bags of clothes with them, tagged prices to them and they will absorb some percentage of the earnings. Lucky me!!! Even though the maximum pieces of clothes was 150, I brought like 40 pieces over only because I was super lazy to pack them….. LOL.

The thing about me is… now that I managed to clear some spaces for the clothes, I will buy new clothes to fill them back again :O

I am quite sure I am not the only one with this problem! Girls like us need a lot of clothes for #OutfitOfTheDay pictures for Instagram!!! Hahaha.

And how can we resist cute outfits like this Totoro pullover right?! Must buy!!

I think not just the clothes. Even my shoe cabinets and make up stash are exploding. I am like a caterpillar. I have over 200 pairs of shoes but I only wear those I love frequently.

I have so many beauty products sometimes I don’t remember its existence! And when I remember it, it is either expired or lost.

I guess I need to make it a habit to spring clean every quarter instead of just doing it once a year..

The Too-Many-Passions Problem: 4 Tips to Help Millennials Choose a Perfect Career

$

Far more successful than they anticipated, our Baby Boomer parents told us we could do everything (soccer, violin and Spanish all together! “Follow your heart!”): the sky was the limit. They consulted us on where our families should vacation, what stores to frequent and our daily dinner menu.

Credit: Dr Caroline M Burns

Thus our mentality growing up wasn’t “I deserve it” so much as it was “I can have it.” But this attitude has become an early-career agony as Gen Y faces an ever-expanding selection of professional paths.

Research has repeatedly found that, despite our idealization of choice, people actually dislike too much of it. When overwhelmed with options, we often choose none. One participant in a study on millennials’ Fear of Better Options (“FOBO”) explained her analysis paralysis—what I’ve called possibility paralysis—like this:

Choosing one door to walk through means all the other doors close, and there’s no ability to return back to that path. And so rather than go through any doorway, it’s better to stand in the atrium and gaze.

With so many potential paths, how do we pick and pursue just one enjoyable, fulfilling career?

Credit: PR News Wire

To the dismay of natural navel-gazers like me, you can’t think your way to what you should do with your life. Marie Forleo told Lewis Howes on his podcast The School of Greatness, “clarity comes from engagement, not thought.” Indeed, my own path out of misery after graduating college hinged on one thing: action.

If you’re passionate and driven but stuck, below are four actions you can take today to choose a career you love

1. Eliminate

Credit: PR Web

“What do I want to do with my life?” is often a non-starter; it’s too hard to decide, especially in the beginning of one’s career. An easier and also productive question is:

“What do I definitely not want to do with my life?”

Write this at the top of a piece of paper, and then actually cross off avenues that don’t appeal to you. It can be incredibly satisfying—and effective—to turn down options. When you purposefully and permanently shut doors, your career begins to feel cozy, hopeful. You start to remember what matters.

Then write: “If I don’t do this in my [twenties, thirties, etc.], I will regret it”

Answer with the activities that you couldn’t live without. If you have multiple, that’s okay; one “calling” isn’t necessary. Marie Forleo knew that if she didn’t pursue dancing, bartending and life coaching all at once, she’d regret it. So she consciously chose all of them.

If you’re consistently doing something that’s not on your ‘I will regret it’ list, stop; you’re running out of time. You can put it on a separate ‘Lukewarm passions that I’ll realistically never get to’ list, if you want.

2. Fail

Credit: Wallpaperology

Sometimes if you don’t eliminate something, it eliminates you. This possibility can be so horrifying that the very thought of it stops us in our tracks.

But failure can be an excellent director. J.K. Rowling explains in her Harvard commencement speech, “failure means a stripping away of the inessential.” I applied for my PhD in English Literature at top-tier schools the year after I graduated college and didn’t get in anywhere. Only then did I realize I don’t even like reading those books. I began focusing on what I knew I cared about and always had: writing and psychology. Once J.K. Rowling was a single mom and dirt poor, her path became clear too:

I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and I began directing all my energy to the only work that truly mattered to me… I was set free.

Write down all the professional work you’re doing daily. As you review your list, notice what you consistently underperform at or resent. If those things don’t relate to your ‘I will regret it’ list, cross them off. You’re free! Even if one of those items is your current job, crossing it off will liberate you to find something better. You won’t abandon anything as easily as you crossed it off, but you have to start somewhere.

If you haven’t failed yet, you will—and that’s a good thing. Rowling says, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you fail by default.” When we see failure as an inevitability and a guide, we’re no longer afraid.

3. Integrate

Credit: Study in the States

Social psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi found that the most successful creative people integrate fields. He also found that creative individuals have complex personalities, bringing together “the entire range of human possibilities within themselves.”

Thus, though multiple passions can feel problematic, they’re also a gift. Marie Forleo—a life coach, motivational speaker, author, web television host and former Nike Elite Dance Athlete—admits feeling overwhelmed by too many passions in her twenties: “I knew I was smart, I knew I was driven, I knew I was willing to work hard, but I couldn’t figure out where my place was… [and] choosing one thing sounded so boring.” Ironically, her integration of all her disparate passions spawned a coveted niche and defined voice in women’s self and career development.

Here are a few ways you can begin integrating your passions today:

  • Start a blog chronicling the intersection, however small, of your passions.
  • Google-stalk someone who’s doing multiple things that you want to do and learn everything you can. Email him/her, express your admiration and ask for advice.
  • Invent a “tagline” including all your present interests. For example, my tagline “the psychology of millennials at work” encompasses my passions for modern work, psychology research and generational issues.

As you assimilate different passions, you might notice that they had underlying similarities all along.

4. Master

Credit: Excel Management

Does this sound familiar?

I’m not where I want to be yet, but I don’t want to be miserable until I get there, because I’m smart enough to know that when I get there my dreams are going to get bigger, so I’m setting myself up for a life of misery. – Marie Forleo on her early twenties

To make ends meet while she pursued her life coaching business on the side for seven years, Marie was simultaneously a bartender, personal assistant and dance coach. The mentality she says “saved” her was: “Whatever is happening in this moment, I’m going to approach it and attack it—whether I’m bartending or scrubbing someone’s floor.” As a result, at the end of her shifts she wasn’t “exhausted from being miserable” and could coach with more energy and confidence. Marie calls this dedication to present mastery no matter the circumstances “making is-ness your business”.

Whatever you’re doing right now, even if you want out, can be practice for your purpose—if you let it. “You have to train yourself,” Marie says: “I’m going to master this, I’m going to bring my A-game, I’m meant to be here, this is my party.” Or, as Abraham Lincoln might have said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Especially when overwhelmed with options, we “try to think our way into an answer, rather than getting into action to try something,” Marie explains. But the most effective solution to stuck-ness is the opposite.

Instead of just musing on your purpose, set goals, strike lukewarm anything, schedule actions, solve a problem. Your progress will be a combination of process of elimination, failure, resourcefulness and your choice to master everything you attempt.

Using Expired Beauty Products?

$

0

You are counting your skin’s death. All beauty products expire. The molecules in these products break down into something else, and you can have a reaction to it. Inflammation of the skin, can in turn lead to redness, bumps, a rash, or even blisters and swelling of the skin. Inflammation is the CAUSE of most skin problems.

3 Main Points Why You Should Not Use Expired Beauty Product?

• Efficiency of active ingredients becomes compromised over time
• Product dries out, get clumpy and does not apply as smoothly
• Bacteria’s home

The general rule is: replace mascaras every three months (or risk getting eye infections), eyeliner and eye shadow every six to 12 months, and lipstick every one and a half years. Meanwhile, the average expiration date for foundation, powder, and other facial makeup is 12 months.

How to know if a Beauty Product Has Expired

• Unusual color, runny or lumpy
• has separated or developed a strange smell
• feels different on the skin than it once did, then throw it away
• Packaging that has expanded

The Dos & Don’ts of Making Your Products Last

Here are some easy tips for prolonging the shelf life of your products, while keeping your skin and body as healthy as possible.

DO:

• Always wash your hands before using products
• Tighten/secure the cap after each use
• Store products in a cabinet or drawer
• Throw away eye products after you've had an eye infection

DON’T:

• DON’T store your products in the refrigerator. Skincare formulas are designed to withstand the average fluctuations in temperature, but not long-term heat or cold storage—that means keeping your products in your fridge reduces their lifespan and stability (I was guilty of this!)
• DON'T store products in direct sunlight
• DON'T share your products with others
• DON’T forget to clean the cap or lid if you drop it on the floor. Use soap and water or rubbing alcohol and dry thoroughly before replacing.

Hope this article will help you to determine if a spoilt/expired product is going back to the drawer or to the bin! Be vain, be safe!

Living Life to the Fullest

There has been many devastating news of late, from the bombing near a children’s playground in Lahore, the gruesome decapitation of a toddler in Taiwan to the passing of little Caitie who was battling an extremely rare form of leukemia. As a parent myself, my heart grew heavy after reading the news and I cannot imagine how the affected families themselves are coping with such a tragedy.  As cliché as the saying goes, life is indeed unpredictable and fragile; we never really know when it is going to be our last day on earth. That is why I believe that we all should strive to make the most of it.

This is open to individual interpretation and some people have it all figured out already. When we talk about living the life, my mind tends to drift to travelling the world, going onto one adventure after another without a care. I remember once reading about a young fellow who travelled the world while working on cruise ships to fund his travelling. It must have been such an eye-opening and priceless experience.

While to others, living your life to the fullest means fulfilling everything on your bucket list. That probably includes the countries you want to tour, experiences you hope to try out and goals you intend to accomplish before leaving this world.

To me, living life to the fullest for now would be to live in the moment and just simply embrace the present. To simply not take it for granted. I used to be a worrywart who always had a penchant for thinking up of the worst-case scenario in any situation. I was the person who probably had what I would think of as a bout of bad luck only to later on realize that it was most probably all just self-fulfilling prophesy. I had wasted so much time thinking about the worse that could happen and ended up not appreciating the present moments at all. Thankfully, I have since tried to alter my perception and I no longer focus on the negative but try to see the positive in every situation. If there is something that bothers me, I try to change it. And should it prove itself beyond my control, I then let it go. Life is simply too short to get upset over every single little problem.

I really enjoy the time I get to spend with my family, especially my only child. I make it a point to hug him everyday and remind him of how much I love him. Because I know that he will only remain this little for now and someday, he would no longer need me. Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we tend to overlook the little details. Like how your child smiles at you when you pick him up from school, or were you too distracted the Facebook updates on your phone to notice it as you hurry him to the car. Or the time your child turned to you for approval after building a tower of blocks he was so proud of only to see you frowning and hunched over your laptop.

Therefore, living life to the fullest for me involves getting my priorities right and focusing on them. This way, I know I can leave without any regrets.

[Blogger Xinyi] A Cleaner Scalp, A Happier Me!

My poor hair has gone through endless rounds of bleaching and colouring to have all my crazy hair colours.

I really love my colourful hair and I guess I won’t be stopping anytime soon. However, at the back of my mind, I know that bleaching and colouring my hair monthly isn’t going to be good for my hair health. My hair is so dry and brittle after all the chemical processes. I also noticed that I’m losing hair so I wanted to get it treated as soon as possible. Prevention is always better than cure.

Just in the nick of time, Beijing 101 invited me down to try out their hair treatment and I thought, why not? I headed there for a consultation to get my scalp checked to make sure that my hair is growing well, and my scalp is in the pink of health.

(Psst: 20 winners get to walk away with a $188 treatment voucher in my giveaway at the end!)

I visited the Century Square branch since it is just walking distance from my home!

Meet Sylvia! The very nice and professional Beijing 101 hair consultant at Beijing 101! Thanks for being so patient and answering my endless string of questions!

Sylvia started the session by asking me questions pertaining to my medical background, lifestyle and habits, all of which will affect hair growth.

I told Sylvia that I’m anaemic and have got low blood iron. During my yearly medical checkups, my doctor had already advised me to take supplements for the condition because the lack of iron in my body may cause hair loss. Sylvia added that habits like smoking, drinking, staying up late and not having enough sleep are also factors that may attribute to hair loss. And of course, looking my my hair colour, she also advised that I should space out the chemical processes on my hair if I really want to continue with the colouring and bleaching.

Scalp analysis at the back of my head

Surprisingly, my scalp health is good on the back of my head. Sylvia told me that my hair is growing well and my hair follicles are in great condition! Weets!

Scalp analysis on the top of my head

And then the horror strikes when she checked my scalp at the top of my head. The areas where the red arrows are pointing to are all the clogs in my hair follicles. They are quite a horrifying sight to behold.

Sylvia told me that clogged hair follicles are one of the main causes of hair loss and unhealthy hair growth, and the clogs are caused by the oil on our scalp. When follicles are clogged, it will be difficult for our baby hair to grow out, and it is also difficult for nutrients to be absorbed by the scalp.

Notice that there is only one strand of hair growing out from each hair follicle? Sylvia told me that I should be seeing at least 2 -3 strands of hair growing out from each follicle if my scalp is healthy. I guess that explains why I feel that my hair is thinning!

It is common for Singaporeans to have oily scalp because of our climate. How many of you have oily scalp like me raise your hands please!! If you do I really suggest that you should head down for an analysis too!

Scalp Cleansing Treatment

To alleviate my scalp issues, Sylvia recommended the scalp cleansing treatment for me.

Hot tea, biscuits, and a hot towel were served so that I will feel comfortable throughout the treatment.

The mask that was going to be applied onto my scalp was made of natural herbal ingredients and its main function was to clean my scalp so that my follicles will be unclogged.

Applying a mask onto my scalp.

A mask was applied onto my scalp with a brush so that the mask can reach hard to reach areas. I love the cool, minty feeling as it sat on my head for a full 20 minutes before washing off.

I didn’t let the 20 mins go to waste. I used their WIFI to do some work! Munched away on the butter biscuits to curb my hunger pangs too!

Sylvia washed my hair for me after that and gave me some tips on hair washing for healthier hair and scalp.

1. Lather up your shampoo first
Applying shampoo directly onto your head will cause hair and scalp damage. It is better to lather up between your palms first.

2. Do not use hot water
Use water that is warm but not hot. Hot water can make your hair dry and brittle and it strips off protective oil.

3. Do not use your nails
Using your nails to scratch your scalp while washing your hair may injure the scalp. Using your fingertips is a better way to massage and clean your scalp and hair.

A hair tonic was applied after my hair was blown dry. A head massage followed so that the tonic will be well absorbed. Boy, the massage was so relaxing. Took the stress away from my stressful day!

As I mentioned earlier, my hair have been through endless chemical processes and it is very thin, brittle and unhealthy. You can see its condition clearly when my hair is wet. It looks almost rubbery and plastic-ky.

Sylvia used this serum (Vitalising Gliss) on my hair to help smoothen it give it some life. It contains keratin amino acids to repair and nourish damaged hair and forms a protective layer over my hair to prevent further damage. Good to know that my hair will be moisturised from inside out with Vitalising Gliss.

If only my hair can look so healthy everyday. Thank you Sylvia for your patience! I have to thank her for her patience because my porous hair took uber long to dry, and, it tangles up terribly and it is really hard to comb too!

Post Treatment Scalp Analysis

Done!

I was eager to see my post scalp analysis because I wanted to know if the treatment really worked.

Scalp analysis at the top of my head.

Look closely and you will notice that there were already less clogged up follicles. All the whitish bits that were present in the pre-treatment scalp analysis were gone!

A zoomed in closer look at a hair follicle.

Sylvia zoomed in and showed me how an open and clean hair follicle looked like. So pleased to see my clean scalp!

I’m not expecting my scalp condition to improve just after one treatment. More sessions are definitely needed for a significant improvement to be seen. My scalp feels nice and clean, and my hair soft and smooth. In fact, I can’t wait for the next treatment, will update you then!

Being the vainpot I am, I want to start taking care of my tresses. Do give Beijing 101 a call to book an appointment if you are facing scalp and hair problems like I do!

The Light Let Down

As someone who has been turned down for sex before, I have to say, it stings! And after a few rejections, you just get to a point where you just rather not ask for it anymore. This brings on feelings of inadequacy, and resentment which could easily destroy a relationship. You see, most couples do not share the same sex drive. That’s perfectly normal! But the manner in which you turn your partner down will impact your relationship.

Even with everything going on well with you on a good day, there are going to be instances when he will really want to have it with you and you are not in the mood to give in no matter what he does to you. Although this might not be a common problem for you, here are some ways to turn him down without hurting his feelings and you having a feeling of guilt in the process.

1. If you have an emotional reason why you are turning him down, let him know and try to work out a solution to the problem with him; that will make him have a better understanding of you and he may also sympathize with whatever problem you may have about your emotional health.

2. If he comes on to you and starts making the moves on you and you do are not in the mood, do not push his hand away, shudder or shout at him when he strokes your body. What he’s doing is not a bad thing, so do not punish him for it! That will make him feel like he is pestering you. Instead, quietly take his hand off and hold it close to your chest, explain that you’re tired, and go in for a cuddle instead. Don’t physically distance yourself just because you’re not in the mood.

3. If there is a physical reason or long term problem why you do not want to have sex with him, open up to him with the truth. Avoiding this discussion can only cause more problems in the future because the problem will obviously not correct itself if you do nothing about it.

4. You can tell him that you are really stressed out due to work activity and that you will soon feel better. Make him a promise that as soon as you get in the mood of having sex you will let him know. This will take some pressure off him, and later when you go to him to tell him that you are feeling horny, he will know that you did not deliberately put him off.

5. Do not, as a way of escape, rely on the old trick of "I have a headache". Once or twice, this may work but except you are having a long-term migraine, he will begin to believe that you feel an allergy towards him whenever you think of having sex with him and this is certainly not a good thing. Rather, tell him that you would really love to have sex with him if he would allow you sleep for a few hours.

So if you’re in a situation where you find your sex drive significantly lower than your partner’s, don’t get mad at him for it. Light him down lightly, and try to find a compromise which suits the both of you.

Paws-ilates? Spelling Error?

Paws-ilates is definitely not a spelling error, and in fact it’s the cousin of the popular Pilates.  To simply put, it’s just Pilates for dogs. Originally created by Andrea Metcalf (a reputable fitness coach and a regular contributor at Oprah.com) for her 2 dogs, Fido and Wrigley, Paws-ilates is a cocktail of spine strengthening exercises, core toners and simple lifts. As recommended by the creator, the exercise is generally suitable for dogs who weigh 25 pounds (11 kg) or less.

Warming Up & Cooling Down

Warm up and cooling down are no exception for Paws-ilates. Before getting down to fun, remember to warm up with your dogg, by standing over it and then bounce the ball while rotating side to side. This helps to engage your obliques and warm up your waistline. Cool down with some light stretches and tender loving tummy rubs for your little ones.

The Pawsilates moves

The Paws-ilates can be broken down into 5 categories as follow:

1) Sitting with Pet: Sit, Lean & Reach

Begin by sitting on the floor with your knees slightly bent and your doggy sits facing you. With both hands, hold onto your doggy, exhale, and gently lean back and reach the other side. Inhale as you return to the starting position. Perform in 20 alternating repetitions.

2) Standing with Pet: Side Bend Power Leash

Stand with your doggy seated at your left side. With both arms bent, hold the leash on your left hand and lift your right arm over your head. Gently reach downward towards your doggy and repeat the step for 10 times.

After which, walk your doggy in circles around you, then sit your doggy on your right side and repeat the exercise.

A Humorous Partner is Important to Me

Which girl doesn’t like guys that can make her laugh everyday? Not necessary that you need to be cracking silly jokes and trying to be funny all the time. But I believe that having humor in the relationship is very important. Laughing together with your partner helps to build bond, connects you quickly with your partner. Laughter is a powerful weapon that lets walls down and breaks emotional barriers. When a fight lingers in a relationship, genuine laughter shared has the potential of ceasing the tension. Laughter always wins.

Like it or not, relationships will start to move on to be a little boring after a while especially when you think you already know your partner inside out. Many of the couples started to take things for granted and stop working the fireworks in the relationship. Laughter is essential for a relationship to thrive.

Here are 6 ways to laugh more with your partner:

1. Start With Conversation – Ask him to share an embarrassing memory. Make sure you share yours too.

2. Be Playful – Play tug-of-war with an item that he wants, like the tv remote or car keys.

3. Be Witty – Tell a joke.

There is too many jokes on the internet and funny photos online which you can send to your partner on his or her phone too.

4. Be Physical – Initiate a tickle war!

5. Be Silly – Just start laughing, its contagious.

To play up your humor, the simplest, most effective way is to just be silly. It shows you're happy, fun, and that you don't take life too seriously. Go for physical humor. Make funny faces, pretend you're stuck in slow-motion, hop on him for a piggyback ride or start a well-meaning food fight.

6. Be Yourself – There is nothing better than someone who is truly genuine and comfortable with themselves. If you can be you, you are showing him that he can be him with nothing to worry about. The humor will come naturally when you're both happy and relaxed! Don't worry about being funny enough for him! If you're light-hearted and enjoy having fun, he'll enjoy having fun with you. Don't worry about the impression you're making. Do what makes you happy and he'll probably want to join in. If you're trying to be funny, it'll come across that you're trying to be funny. Be natural and let the conversation flow naturally. The humor will come!

The Busy Career Woman's Guide to Keeping Fit

Are you putting in the hours at work on your way to the top? You go girl! However, climbing that corporate ladder can take its toll on your health. Sitting bent over a desk all day, drying air-conditioning and stress can all make you less than perky.

Not to worry! Here are some simple tips to keep you healthy while you’re working overtime.

Work it

It can be hard to find time for exercise if you work long hours, but these simple steps can easily be integrated into your daily routine:

1. Walk or cycle to work. If you take public transport, get off a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way. Once inside, take the stairs instead of the lift.

2. After lunch, take a brisk walk around the block, or offer to be the one who goes out to get coffee. Walking gets your blood circulating and improves energy levels.

3. Instead of emailing a co-worker, walk over to them. Stand up when reading notes or talking on your phone.

These may seem like small things but they all add up when you don’t have time to hit the gym.

Loosen up

A common complaint among office workers is a stiff neck and shoulders from sitting hunched over a computer all day.

Take small breaks and avoid being hunched over the computer all day.

Keep your muscles loose with these simple stretches:

• Sitting tall in your chair, stretch both arms over your head and reach for the sky. After 10 seconds, extend the right hand higher, then the left.

• Put your left ear to your left shoulder, hold for 10 seconds, then do the same on the right side.

• Sitting up straight, slowly roll your shoulders forward ten times then backward ten times.

Doing these easy exercises at least once a day will help prevent aching joints when you get home. You can also try spritzing a bit of moisturiser onto your hands, and giving yourself a quick neck rub to loosen up.

Don’t dry out

Sitting in air conditioning all day can leave your skin parched, so use a spray-on moisturiser to get supple skin in just one spritz. The Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturiser (read reviews here!) contains micro-droplets of Vaseline Jelly, which heals dry skin by locking the moisture in. This means your skin will stay soft and smooth throughout your work day and beyond. Plus, the product doesn’t leave a sticky, oily after feel, so you can go right back to typing after applying.

Give yourself a boost

Fight that afternoon slump with a healthy snack instead of reaching for the chocolate.

Put down the bar of chocolate. (Flickr/Siona Karen)

Tempting as it is, snacking on chocolate can lead to a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a drop below normal levels, leaving you even more tired than before, and full of extra calories. Try a guilt-free, energy boosting bowl of fresh fruit and nuts instead, feeding your brain instead of your sweet tooth!

Fruits and nuts make a guilt-free perk-me-up snack! (Flickr/Migle)

By integrating these simple tips into your working hours you’ll soon see the difference in your appearance, energy levels and overall health!

I Broke Old-School Fashion Rules for a Week and Everybody Stared at Me

$
0
0

It took me until my freshman year of high school to realize there were so many RULES about what to wear. (Besides, like, “Don’t walk around naked.”)

Credit: Elite Daily

It all started the day I went to school dressed in a pair of gray jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and silver shoes. My friends absolutely lost it.

“Candice, are you kidding? What were you thinking?! You’re dressed head-to-toe in gray. You are legitimately wearing a groutfit.” They could not stop laughing.

To be honest, I thought I looked cool in my gray-on-gray-on-gray that morning. Turns out I was wrong. I learned the hard way that wearing an outfit completely comprised of one color is a HUGE fashion faux pas.

Of course there are some rules I can get behind. I get the ones that we need to, you know, keep society in order or whatever. “Don’t murder.” Consider it done! “Don’t steal.” You got it! “Don’t rape.” HEARD that! “Don’t cheat.” Would never!

But why do there need to be all of these societal rules about what I should wear?! Those are the ones that BUG me.

As I have mentioned about eight million times before, I don’t really get fashion. Despite my growing up in a very fashion-centric environment, it never REALLY made sense to me. Like, what? Is anybody going to die if I wear a dress and jeans? Also, would any of us even think that was a weird look if someone hadn’t decided, God-knows-when, that it was?

So I decided to give it a go. For six days straight, I wore outfits deemed sinful by the gods of fashion. And this is what happened.

Day one: Dressed head-to-toe in one (bright) color

If you read my intro, you know this one hits close to home for me. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough gray in my wardrobe to recreate the infamous “groutfit” of 2008, but I did have a lot of red…

Credit: Elite Daily

So, yeah. There it is. A red top paired with red jeans and red ballet flats. I looked like a chili pepper or the red Power Ranger. What’s funny is that people liked my top (OK, FINE, technically it was my roommate’s top), so I got a lot of compliments when I was sitting down. But the minute I stood up in this little number, there was NO shortage of weird looks. Guys, girls … it didn’t matter. I looked weird.

Day two: Visible panty line

My second day doing this social experiment, I decided to go with a CLASSIC faux pas and a personal pet peeve of mine: the visible panty line.

I went for an extremely standard Candice Jalili outfit: an oversized black sweater, black leggings, a statement necklace and black booties. In case you couldn’t tell, huge fan of black over here. But instead of my classic thong underneath, I went for a pair of more “full-coverage” panties, if you will.

Credit: Elite Daily

OK. First of all, I have to say that I’ve gained a new respect for people who walk around with panty lines. Because managing to find a pair that actually gave me one was HARD. Finding the right pair took about four tries, with my roommate closely examining my butt under different lights as I repeatedly asked her what she would do “if I farted right now.”

I went through three pairs of lace and Spandex cheekies and hipsters with, at the very best, an extremely faint trace of a panty line only under extremely bright light. Then I finally found a frilly bikini-cut pair that really showed my VPL under every kind of light.

This one was interesting for a few reasons. First and foremost, I learned that guys don’t know what VPLs are. From my guy friends to my co-workers to my dad, nobody knew WTF I was talking about. Which is funny, because they are such a thing in girl world.

Second, girls do know. And they do glare and look at you like you have an extra head growing out of your butt cheeks.

Day three: Dress and jeans

A middle-school classic! I had to try this one out. I decided to pair my favorite pair of jeans with my favorite sundress and then casually posed in front of a construction site in my neighborhood.

Credit: Elite Daily

This might have been the outfit that made me personally feel the most awkward. I didn’t even get as many weird looks as I did with, say, the head-to-toe red outfit. But something about it just made me feel weird. I kept finding myself wanting to reach out to strangers on the street with disclaimers like, “I know this outfit’s weird haha seriously please don’t judge me!!”

I think it was the specific level of slight weirdness. I sensed that people were thinking I seriously thought this was a cute outfit, and that made me just feel immensely awkward.

Day four: Bra strap showing out of tube top

This look is a personal pet peeve of mine. And when my cousin, Caroline, sees this article, she will flip, because I get mad at her for doing it all of the time. Like, HOW hard is it to go with a strapless bra or maybe some pasties?

But, then again, I have A-cup boobs and am not quite ~sensitive~ to the fact that strapless bras don’t cut it for everyone. Anyway, I decided to take a page out of her book and try out the whole straps-busting-out-of-tube-top look.

Credit: Elite Daily

I usually just YOLO and wear this top with no bra, and I HATED how it looked with my black bra straps popping out underneath. But I gotta say that this was a much more functionally sound than my usually very nip-slip-prone look.

Day five: Socks and sandals

Ah, socks and sandals — the universal fashion symbol for “I am a dweeb.” I just had to try out the look. I went for a pretty standard shorts-and-a-tank summer outfit and paired it with my go-to pair of black sandals. Then I threw on a pair of striped navy socks.

Credit: Elite Daily

I don’t get this look. Like, I can understand the necessity of the VPL if you literally did not have any other pair of panties left. The bra straps I get, because of the functionality. But socks and sandals? I DON’T GET IT.

If your feet are going to be cold, don’t wear sandals. Simple as that.

And honestly, because SANDALS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE WORN WITH SOCKS, it was really uncomfortable. My thong sandals pushed the fabric of my sock deep between my big and index toes, and then the sock would get extra tight around the rest of my toes. This isn’t to mention that the cotton socks don’t grip the patent leather of the sandals as well as my skin, so my feet kept slipping in and out of the shoe. Oh, and also I looked like an idiot.

Day six: Running shoes with a normal outfit

I thought of this one when I let my dad dress me the other week. One of the outfits he chose for me was a normal outfit with running shoes. And I felt SO awkward. Why? Because it’s a faux pas to pair running shoes with a normal outfit!

So I naturally had to include it in this piece. This time, I paired my bright green Nike Free sneakers with a tight black skirt and a floral, white crop top. An outfit I would maybe wear on a summer date … that also happened to involve a relay race.

Credit: Elite Daily

I’m not sure if it’s because I already had some practice in this sort of ensemble when my dad dressed me, but I was not phased by this outfit at all. It made SENSE. These shoes were way more comfortable than the heels I probably would have paired with this outfit. And I can get behind anything that makes sense. Yeah, I got a weird look or eight, but, like, who cares? Bye to them.

Would I try these again?

For the most part, no. I’m not sure if I’ve been psychologically programmed to find these looks heinous or if I actually do just think they’re ugly, but the fact of the matter remains that I didn’t like any of these outfits. No matter what kind of looks I get, I’m never going to feel comfortable in anything I don’t like.

But I will say that there are some rules I am going to call bullsh*t on. Like, WHY does having a panty line have to be so weird? This guy seemed to be down with mine:

The 2 Items That Are Very Special to Me

$

Not exactly a hand me down item, but there are 2 items that are very precious to me. One is a bracelet that my dad gave me when I was younger, and the other one is a ring that was given by my Ahma.

I couldn’t wear the ring anymore because it’s super big, lol.

I think this 2 items have been with me for about 14 years, the bracelet is always with me because I’m never with my dad. And the ring was being kept in my drawer with my other precious items.

Look at this ring.. I think I have to polish it already.

The gold bracelet which I highly suspect is fake gold but I don’t care at all.

Actually I used to have more things, like a handkerchief, a piece of newspaper with my dad’s quote. When I was younger, he taught me that when im right people don’t remember, when im wrong, people always forget. This follows me until today, and it’s actually very true.

These stuffs are very precious to me because parents and grandparents won’t be together with me forever and these are the things that will make me feel that they are always with me.

After typing the above, I realized that I didn’t keep anything that is from my mom. Come to think of it, I don’t think she really gave me anything that has sentimental value to it. Sometimes I feel that I’m quite emotionless towards her, but when I realized that one day she might just leave this world, I still feel sad about it. I think you can’t deny this mother and daughter bond then.

By the way don’t be mistaken. She’s still my mom, we are close but not that kind of mother daughter kind of close. She’s more like a friend that I meet once or twice a year. Hais weird feeling. I do enjoy when we laugh together though, that makes me feel like she’s my mom because both of us are weird and funny. Lol!

Anyway, I’m sure you’re thinking why am I typing this today. Actually other than letting you know more about me, I am also reminding myself that I should learn to cherish people and things more. I don’t want to wait until they are gone and regret why I didn’t treat them better, especially when I’m a very hot tempered person, many times I just vent it out on my closed ones. This is something that I have to work very hard on.

While I’m here working on it, I also hope that you can take some time out of your busy schedule and reflect about how you’ve been treating your family, and if you’ve been spending enough time with them. If it’s positive then good for you, otherwise it’s time to do something about it.

A super old photo of me and my ahma. :p

Top Sweet Pick up Lines in Korean Drama 'Descendants of the Sun'

$
0

The most popular drama this season is undeniably Descendants of the Sun – good looking cast starring Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-kyo, Kim Ji-won and Jin Goo on top of the romantic sense of humour (how ironic) from the male lead.

Here are some of my favourite lines that cracked me up, never knew humour/sarcasm can be sweet too!

#1 Turning off off the lights

Kang Mo Yeon: “When I come to the movie theatre, this is the moment when I get most excited. Right before they turn off the lights.”
Yoo Si Jin: “Out of all the moments in my life, I am the most excited right now. Being with a beautiful lady right before the lights turn off.”
Kang Mo Yeon: “Not an elderly?”
Yoo Si Jin: “I mistook you for a beautiful lady because it’s dark.”

#2 See-through clothes

Yoo Si Jin: “Put this [jacket] on. I can see through your clothes.”
Kang Mo Yeon: “Why did you give this to me only now?!”
Yoo Si Jin: “Because I’ve seen everything already, and I don’t want anyone else to.”

#3 Shutting her up with a kiss – never fails.

Yoo Si Jin: “Are you jealous?”
Kang Mo Yeon: “If she’s that pretty, you should’ve dated her.”
Kang Mo Yeon: “What are you doing?”
Yoo Si Jin: “I’m shutting your mouth in a sexy way. You can try talking again.”

#4 Never knew someone in love will ask for explosives

Yoo Si Jin: “Are you crying right now?”
Kang Mo Yeon: “Is it okay in there? Do you need anything?”
Yoo Si Jin: “I need C4 or RDX.”
Kang Mo Yeon: “What is that?”
Yoo Si Jin: “Explosives. I was okay until now, but I suddenly want to break the door and get out. Because of somebody.”

#5 She’ll be speechless at this “confession”

Yoo Si Jin: “After kissing you without permission…”
Kang Mo Yeon: “I told you not to bring it up first-“
Yoo Si Jin: “What should I do? Should I apologise…”
Yoo Si Jin: “Or should I confess my love?”

5 Things You Can Do to Help Save the Earth

$

Going green is easier than you think. Taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility – IT IS A PRIVILEGE. There are little things you can do every day to help reduce the greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment. Here are 5 things on what you can do to save this beautiful Earth!

1. Pay attention on water usage. The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth, or shampooing or lathering your body with soap, you’re doing something good. Try drinking tap water instead of bottled water, so you are not wasting all that packaging. Wash your clothes in cold water whenever you can too!

2. I do have family car that I can drive but I choose to take the public transport or walk to work! If you can stay off the road just by a few days a week, you will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds per year. If going to places is too much of a hassle for you, combine your errands – hit the groceries, pick up your shoe repair all in one trip. It will save you gas and time.

3. Now this is my all time favorite! Walk or ride your bike to work, school and anywhere you can. Not only you help to reduce the greenhouse gases, you will burn calories which will improve your health at the same time! As mentioned before, if you cannot walk or bike, use mass transit or carpool.

4. RECYCLE. You can help reduce pollution by putting that soda can in a different bin. If you are trying to choose between two products, pick the one with the least packaging.

5. Turn off lights when you are not in the room and unplug appliances when you are not using them. It only takes a second to be environmentally conscious. Also, make your home more energy efficient. Clean you air filters so your system does not have to work overtime.

Even if you're not an Orange Is the New Black fan, chances are high that you've stumbled across Ruby Rose's name: the Aussie actress and model was the fifth most searched person on Google in 2015 (coming in right after Donald Trump, for context), and the most googled actress of the year. You'll probably spot Rose on billboards and in glossies soon — she's one of the faces of Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren's new campaign, out today — and you'll certainly be seeing more of her in the multiplex this year and next. Rose spoke with Refinery29 about the campaign, androgyny in fashion, and why gender-fluid role models really do matter.

Your look in the campaign is quite androgynous. Did you have much input in terms of the styling?
"I chose all of the looks, and we had an amazing stylist there as well. She chose 20 to 30 of the most Ruby Rose-type looks, and we narrowed it down from there. They’re strong looks I’d actually wear in my real life. Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply does do a lot of denim and edgy things, but they also do dresses and skirts — things that I’m less likely to wear. That’s why there are amazing models like Hailey Baldwin in the campaign, to wear those beautiful dresses."

How has clothing helped reinforce your sexual identity?
"I’ve always been a tomboy, and been gender-fluid; I have days where I dress more femininely, and then there are days where I’ll dress with a masculine vibe. It’s what I’ve always done, but now I can understand why I’m doing it more. Before, [when I’d dress androgynously] people on the street would say, 'Oh, you’re dressed like a dude!' — I would get confused, and it would kind of get to me. We’re now breaking down those barriers; that includes brands like Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply allowing a female spokesperson to dress the way [I do] — androgynously.

"Dressing the way I dress, and the androgynous look, doesn’t really have to do with sexuality — a lot of heterosexual women dress androgynously, and straight guys can dress femininely. Those boundaries in fashion are slowly being broken down; regardless of who you are, it’s about dressing for what you want to express. I’m allowing myself to dress how I want to, based on my identity, not based on how people want or think I should dress. That has made me happy, true to myself, and confident."

What are your thoughts on gender fluidity becoming a major conversation in the fashion industry these days?
"I think it’s great. In some fashion campaigns, [gender fluidity] has been done before, but now boundaries are being broken down in a much bigger way. Whether it’s in fashion or film, there’s a big social impact: Jenji Kohan did a really massive thing by casting a transgender woman [Laverne Cox] to play a transgender woman in Orange Is the New Black. Transparent definitely sparked a conversation, too. Then, there are different celebrities that have come out as gender-fluid."

What's the impact?
"The reason this is important isn’t for people my age and older; it’s really about the younger generation. They’re less secure themselves and why they look or feel a certain way — they look everywhere to find identity and normalcy somewhere. If a boy wants to wear dresses and doesn’t understand why he wants to do that, it’s great to have role models like Jaden Smith doing that, being comfortable doing that, and looking good doing it. We have girls that want to dress like boys: What does that mean? They can feel confused and heartbroken, and on top of that, be bullied for what they’re wearing. The more we make [gender fluidity] mainstream, and the more this conversation continues and happens everywhere — that’s how a younger generation can be whomever they want to be. It’s freeing."
