With all the unfamiliar faces, gigantic machines and unspoken rules, the gym can be an intimidating place (especially for first timers). Being in such an uncharted territory, it’s inevitable to make a few Oops!

But fret not, here the remedy for you to avoid embarrassing yourself on your first day.

Oops  #1: Dissing the Trainers

Sometime we just want to be left alone, yes? And we think every trainer that try to approach us are hoping to make a sale, yes again?

Well, rather than totally ignoring the trainers, why not spare them a couple of minutes? Most of these trainers are genuinely nice, and they really want to help you. At the very least, you’ll learn a few new exercises, and at the most, you’ll make a really knowledgeable fitness mentor. Can someone say it’s a win-win situation?

Oops #2: Being a Copycat

Just because that lady has “Apollo Belt” (which you’re so dying to get) and is running on the treadmill at 16.1 kph do not mean you should follow suit.  Everyone body is programmed in different ways, and fitness goals should be based on the realities of your genetics. Besides, that lady might be doing something that does not complement your current fitness level too (read: dangerous).

Oops #3: Keep Your Comments to Yourself

Okay you might be gym-ing for a couple of times, or have try that that piece of equipment previously or just simply possess knowledge on the proper forms and techniques. But we say, no matter how much you want to voice out your opinions to another fellow gym-goer, it might be wise to leave it to the professionals. We bet you couldn’t want the weight of somebody’s injuries on your shoulders right?

Oops #4: Being Too Enthusiastic and Overdoing It

We know you might be too eager to see results, thus the increased duration and frequency of training. But instead the results you’re striving for might be some pretty serious soreness or injuries. In fact, go easy for the first 4 to 6 weeks of training, for the neural pathways to perform the correct movement. After that, you can gradually increase your fitness level.

Oops #5: Thinking It’s Clean

The gym is crowded with many people and in fact it’s a pool for germs. Do yourself and your fellow gym goers a favour by wiping the equipment before and after use. Remember to wash your hands too to avoid being a germ carrier.
